The map, sometimes called the "minimap", is a navigation tool that displays the entire map of the game.
It is not visible when initially entering the game, but it can be through clicking the 
button the very bottom of your screen or pressing M on your keyboard, this will raise the map from the bottom of your screen. To hide the map is self explanatory.
It is extremely useful, so make sure to have it open not all of the time, but most of the time because it may block some content. The choice is yours. When poisoned or set in flames, you could find water using this, or if you perhaps need to find a biome, etc.
